Roaring start to Chinese Year of the Tiger

Celebrating the Chinese new year with a dance performance in the Octagon, in Dunedin, yesterday in a handcrafted green boat outfit is Xiuzhu Wang, alongside members of the Dunedin Senior Chinese Association.

Secretary Racee Ngiam said a planned celebration at the Chinese Gardens later in the month had been cancelled because of the Red Covid setting.

The association practised every week and still wanted to show off its routine and start the Year of the Tiger in good spirits, so performed in the Octagon instead.

Importing from China was difficult because of Covid-19, so members of the organisation made the green boat costume by hand, Miss Ngiam said.

The group would soon feature on CCTV-4, a Chinese television channel featuring stories from Chinese people living overseas.

They would be discussing and showing their lives as Chinese people in Dunedin.
