The street forms part of State Highway 87 and the section between Nottage St and Mold St is considered a strategic route of concern for earthquake activity because it is likely to be used by emergency services and at least one building there could block access if it collapses.
It has also been flagged by the Dunedin City Council because it is well used by vehicles and pedestrians and there is potential for part of an unreinforced masonry building to fall there.
Snow Ave and part of Aberafon St are the other two Middlemarch streets identified as potentially vulnerable in a moderate earthquake.
Strath Taieri residents are being asked for feedback on key routes in their area, as a step towards identifying earthquake-prone buildings.
While most of the area covered by the council is in a low seismic risk zone, an area north and west of Sutton, including Middlemarch, is a medium-risk zone.
The council needs to identify buildings that could be a priority for strengthening work or risk management, but it is first seeking feedback about key vehicle and pedestrian routes in Strath Taieri.
