"An Evening with Dame Kiri", on March 27, will be her only New Zealand performance between her Australian and European engagements.
Dame Kiri's interest in performing in Oamaru was sparked in 2009 when she learned of the $10 million refurbishment of the Opera House and her appearance was cemented through contacts made by Opera House director Megan Peacock-Coyle before she moved from Hawkes Bay to take up the Oamaru role in May.
"Over the years I've heard and read much about Oamaru, its beautiful buildings and Opera House, now recently refurbished," Dame Kiri said.
"I leapt at the opportunity to finally visit Oamaru," she said.
Details of the concert were released at a special function in Oamaru last night.
Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton said Oamaru was privileged to be hosting Dame Kiri, describing it as "a coup of major proportions".
"I still can't quite believe it is happening and we may have to pinch ourselves a bit," he said.
That did not stop Mr Familton bidding $800 for the two "best seats in the house" and tickets to the post-performance supper with Dame Kiri, the money going to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The recital will be in the Whitestone Contracting auditorium, which has 550 seats.
Waitaki district residents get first chance at a limited number of tickets, with preferential bookings from today until Friday, October 26, when they go on sale to the rest of New Zealand.
Dame Kiri will be accompanied by pianist Terence Dennis.
