A group of children involved in a car crash at Papakaio on Tuesday afternoon escaped with minor injuries, police reported yesterday.

Constable Stewart Hewett said a vehicle with one occupant was pulling out of the driver's farm road to cross McPhersons Rd, when it collided with an east-bound Suzuki Vitara about 3pm.

"The car was very dark in colour, and with the weather the way it was yesterday, it would have been very hard to see."

The second vehicle contained five people, including four children, Const Hewett said.

Two ambulances and two fire engines attended the scene but, although both vehicles were "very badly damaged", injuries were minor, he said.

The children in the second vehicle had been appropriately seated, "one in the front and three in the back".
