Awareness of the environment can be seen all across Sawyers Bay School.

The Dunedin school recently won the Dunedin Amenities Society best school project award at the Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards, for a range of activities.

Projects at the school have included creating a colourful mural out of plastic bottle caps, including some collected from the school grounds.

Pupils had taken part in native planting by Pete’s Patch near the nearby salmon hatchery, as well as planting fruit trees.

The school had a worm farm and there was a regular gardening group during the lunch break.

New rubbish and recycling bins had been installed at the school, and food waste was collected by local families and used to feed chickens.

Teacher Leslee Swete said winning the award was unexpected and all at the school were very proud of the achievement.
