Better be safe than sorry.
That was the approach taken by Southland Boys’ High School when it informed parents a family member of a pupil had been diagnosed with measles.
But the Southern District Health Board confirmed yesterday there were no cases of measles in Invercargill.
Associate rector Ray Laurenson said the school received a call about the situation and decided to take a proactive response.
It issued a statement so families would be aware of the situation and on the lookout for
possible symptoms.
After the confirmation from the SDHB, another statement was issued stating there were no confirmed cases of measles.
Mr Laurenson was relieved.
"We’ve been reassuring people throughout the day and waiting for more information.
"With the Covid world — especially with Wellington and everything else going on, our plan is to be proactive.
"It caused major concerns but it is better to be safer than be wrong."
The pupil concerned remained at home and would update the school community if the situation changed, he said.
