A new exercise programme will be launched in Oamaru this month aimed at reducing the number of falls by elderly residents.
The Gentle Exercise Programme, run by Sport Waitaki and Age Concern, will begin on September 18, and will take place every Tuesday afternoon at the Settlers Hall on Severn St.
Classes would include a range of exercises and movements designed by a diversional therapist.
Age Concern Waitaki co-ordinator Wayne Stringer said the programme not only hoped to reduce falls but also brought together those in the community who may be socially isolated.
Mr Stringer said the exercises could be performed seated, and would help keep elderly members of the community mobile.
"Once people do have falls and break hips, it's very difficult to get back into a mobile state, and funnily enough spring seems to be the time when people start having falls.
"With the joy of spring, people start to think they can do more than they should be doing and consequently have falls." Network Waitaki provided $1500 of funding for the exercise programme, and Sport Waitaki co-ordinator Kate Cartwright said she was thrilled to see the programme under way.
"We are excited to begin the programme as such a low-impact class is not currently offered to the community.
"There is no registration required. Simply turn up to the Early Settlers Hall ready to learn some new moves aimed to keep you active and independent in a friendly environment with some like-minded people."
