Two injured on skifields

Two Auckland women suffered severe injuries at Coronet Peak and the Remarkables skifields at about the same time yesterday, but neither was skiing or snowboarding.

A 34-year-old woman was in intensive care in Dunedin Hospital last night with a traumatic brain injury after she was found unconscious by a member of the public near the Shadow Basin lookout of the Remarkables about 2.15pm.

St John Queenstown team leader Alana Reid said yesterday two St John paramedics aboard a Lakes District Air Rescue Trust helicopter attended the woman at the scene and she was flown to Lakes District Hospital.

A Dunedin helicopter later flew the patient from the hospital to Dunedin Hospital.

Across the Wakatipu Basin, a 50-year-old woman, who was not skiing or boarding, suffered a leg injury when she fell from a chairlift at Coronet Peak yesterday. She was treated by skifield medics and taken by a St John ambulance to Lakes District Hospital.
