Henry Ruddenklau, who died last week at the age of 76, raced several good gallopers including First Look, winner of the Winter Cup, and Ocean Guard (New Zealand Grand National Hurdles).
First Look won the Winter Cup in 1995 when trained by John and Kerry Phillips at Winton.
Shorty Bijou won nine races, including the 1989 Cromwell Cup, for Ruddenklau from the Phillips stable.
John Phillips prepared Ocean Guard for his first five wins. The Imperial Guard-Sea Girl gelding was transferred to Rex Cochrane at Gore as a 5yr-old and carried on to win the 1986 Riverton Cup and 1988 National Hurdles.
Ruddenklau bred Ocean Guard, the winner of 23 races.
He began breeding from Surfside, the granddam of Ocean Guard, in 1963.
Walden Pond (1986 and 87 Otago Hurdles) and Dual both won 13 races for Ruddenklau from the Cochrane stable.
Connie Lawn won nine, including the 1987 South Island Breeders' Stakes. Fiery Filou won a similar number, including the 1976 Waimate Cup.
Ruddenklau was born and grew up in Waimate. He moved to Dipton as a 21-year-old to manage the 3150ha family property, Glencairn Station.
He had been in a rest-home in Timaru in recent years.
