Queenstown hockey will be well-represented at the boys Hatch Cup tournament in Christchurch this October.

Five players from the Queenstown primary A team have been selected for the Central Otago under 13 team to compete in the annual national tournament.

Ben Evans, Ben Wilkinson, Finn Donovan, Chester Rosie and Ayden Boyd all play in the Cromwell competition weekly and will train there once a week in the lead-up to the tournament.

The side will also play warm-up matches against other provincial teams.

Queenstown siblings Jack and Kate Gilbert have just returned from their respective under-18 boys and girls national tournaments.

Jack, who plays for the Queenstown Blue men's team, was part of a Southern side which made it all the way to the semifinals in Palmerston North at the beginning of the school holidays.

Southern upset a strong Waikato side in the quarter-finals to get there, but was beaten by eventual tournament winner, Canterbury.

The team comprised top representatives from Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown. In the tournament opener Jack scored a hat-trick to secure the team's win against Tauranga 3-1, and was one of his team's top goal-scorers for the week.

The under-18 Southern girls side also impressed in Dunedin during the same week and was placed sixth overall.

Jack is a Wakatipu High School pupil while Kate is undergoing her first year of study at Otago University.
