Jeremy William Mataira, 48, an inmate at Auckland Prison at Paremoremo, was found guilty by an Auckland District Court jury yesterday of assault with intent to commit sexual violation, kidnapping, assault and assault with a weapon in relation to an incident on September 8, 2006, The New Zealand Herald reported.
He was convicted of sexual violation and attempting to rape another female prison guard while in Christchurch's Paparua Prison in 1991, serving a rape sentence.
He raped the 40-year-old female prison officer who was on her own in the gymnasium at the prison.
At the time a psychologist said Mataira would reoffend and was dangerous.
Mataira barricaded himself in a storeroom with another woman prison guard at Auckland Prison for three hours in 2006.
He said he chose her because she had the most chance of surviving the ordeal, however the prosecution said he had sexual fantasies about her and that is why he chose her.
The prison guard, who has permanent name suppression, was blindfolded and her feet were bound during the ordeal. She said Mataira started kissing and stroking her feet and legs.
At one point the female officer started screaming because she thought she was going to die.
Armed police stormed into the room, throwing stun grenades and using tear gas to disable Mataira who had pulled the guard down in a choke hold.
Mataira admitted taking the guard hostage but said he did not intend to harm her.
He was remanded in custody until callover in the High Court on October 8.
