Roller-skating continues to grow in popularity among Dunedin's female population, prompting additional competition.

The Dunedin Derby's first intra-league bout, dubbed the Mid-Winter Brawl, saw 24 members compete at the Edgar Centre on Saturday night.

Since the establishment of Dunedin's travelling team, the Gallow Lasses, more women have joined the league.

To give new members a competitive edge, they were paired with experienced skaters in the intra-league battle's competing sides, A.C.C and B*A*S*H.

Competition started at 7.30pm and B*A*S*H took an early lead.

After trailing in the first 30-minute half, A.C.C forged ahead in the last "ram" of the second half, skater and derby media liaison Karen McDonald said.

It was a close bout and A.C.C finished on 226 points, ahead of B*A*S*H on 220.

McDonald estimated between 800 and 1000 people watched the brawl - a "good" turnout considering the lack of regional rivalry.

"It certainly displayed a lot of physicality.

"There were some quite big hits," she said.

The derby had no immediate plans for a second intra-league showdown, but Gallow Lasses would next compete at a tournament in Palmerston North, comprising 11 teams from throughout New Zealand, McDonald said.

Gallow Lasses had won all its three games, including the final, at a recent tournament in Nelson.
