Myanmar nationals to protest junta

Two Dunedin residents from Myanmar will speak out as part of a peaceful protest, despite fears of reprisal from the military junta.

The protest will be held at the Dunedin Railway Station on Sunday morning, in solidarity with Myanmar, amid a military coup.

"Please help 54million people in Myanmar to escape from this junta," they said.

The pair asked not to be named after Myanmar’s military warned last week that anti-coup protesters could face up to 20 years in prison if found inciting hatred towards the military.

They also feared for their families who still live in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

"They are fearful and very insecure —[the military] can come into your house without a warrant.

"As long as you wear a uniform or a gun, you have an authority to do whatever you like," they said.

It follows the army seizing power in Myanmar after alleging fraud in November elections.

Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party won in a landslide against a pro-military party, was detained, along with most of the party leadership.

The electoral commission dismissed the fraud complaints.
