Rugby: Backline pair re-sign with Canes

Andre Taylor, Super Rugby's top try scorer this year, and utility back Alapati Leiua today announced their commitment to the Hurricanes by re-signing to the franchise.

Taylor has been a lethal backline weapon for the Hurricanes this season with a commanding 10 tries in 14 matches and the 24-year-old has signed on for another two years.

"I'm thrilled to sign with the Hurricanes. I've really enjoyed this season and I'm looking forward to continuing to do the best I can for this team," Taylor says.

Samoan-born Leiua has re-signed for another season and head coach Mark Hammett was pleased to retain two instrumental figures for the Hurricanes.

"Andre has really hit his form this year and found himself a home in the backline. Alapati has continued to be a solid performer in both the wings and midfield. They are both young and hard-working guys so their commitment will add to the momentum we're building."

Meanwhile, Ardie Savea, the younger brother of All Black wing Julian, has been named on the Hurricanes bench for their exhibition game against the Reds on the Sunshine Coast this Friday.

Super Rugby is on a three-week break due to the international window and the younger Savea, who only finished high school last year, is primarily a loose forward who has also played for the New Zealand sevens side this year.

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett has named a team mixed with wider training group players or personnel he hasn't used regularly this season, while he has taken the opportunity to rest a number of senior men who have played big minutes this year.

The Reds are the only Australian team the Hurricanes will not face in the regular season of the Super Rugby competition under the new conference format introduced last year.

Kick off in the Sunshine Coast this Friday is 6pm (Aus Time) and 8pm (NZT).

Hurricanes: James Marshall, Richard Buckman/Waisake Naholo, Alapati Leiua, Jayden Hayward, Andre Taylor, Tusi Pisi, Chris Eaton, Mike Coman, Jack lam, Brad Shields, James Broadhurst, Mark Reddish, Michael Bent, Motu Matu'u, Reg Goodes.
