Columba College won the Otago secondary schools netball championships at the Edgar Centre yesterday but it was a close-run thing.

The Columba side had to come back from a four-goal deficit at three-quarter time to beat South Otago High School 19-17, in a final which ebbed and flowed.

Columba led 4-3 at the first break but South Otago went ahead 10-8 at halftime, and extended that to 15-11 after three quarters, having at one stage been six goals ahead.

But Columba College came steaming home to win, grabbing a couple of vital interceptions to get back into the lead and win the game.

It is the fourth year in a row Columba has won the competition.

Columba centre Olivia Wilson impressed with her passing, while Bridget Thayer made some important shots.

Sophie Erwood and Millie Shaw combined well in the circle for South Otago, which was in the final for the first time, while South Otago centre Jo Harrex moved the ball through court well.

In the senior B final, Catlins Area School beat Kaikorai Valley College 21-16.

Mt Aspiring College beat St Hilda's Collegiate School 24-18 in the intermediate final, while the junior grade was won by Dunstan High School, which beat Columba College 22-12 in the final.
