Delay in powering on streetlights in west of city

Swathes of Dunedin were left in the dark on Monday after a delay in turning on the streetlights in part of the city.

An Aurora Energy spokeswoman said the delay in turning on streetlights in Dunedin’s western suburbs came after maintenance was carried out

at the Halfway Bush grid exit point.

"Aurora Energy dispatched a fault team when we became aware of the issue and all streetlights were turned on by 10.40pm last night [Monday]," the spokeswoman said.

The company tested the signal yesterday and was confident the outage would not recur.

She could not say yesterday afternoon how widespread the outage was.

Cr Lee Vandervis asked at yesterday’s full Dunedin City Council meeting whether the "major" outage was a council issue or an Aurora Energy issue.

Dunedin City Holdings chairman Keith Cooper said he did not know at the time of the meeting.
