Despite being left to die in a cold Dunedin alleyway nine weeks ago, five mixed-breed puppies are in full health and ready to be adopted as pets.

Napoleon, Nero, Nikita, Noah and Nico are the survivors from a litter of seven abandoned in a lane near Brockville Rd in late February.

A man walking home at night stumbled upon the pups as they huddled in an open cardboard beer box.

He took them, still with their eyes closed and just a day or so old, to SPCA Otago.

Although two puppies died, Dunedin woman Susan Turner nurtured the others to an age where they could be adopted.

They were returned to the SPCA kennels at the weekend and are being cared for by staff until homes are found.
