Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei places a white poppy at the International Peace Pole at the Otago Museum Reserve yesterday.

She was one of half a dozen people who gathered to honour the fallen and embrace world peace.

"Different people want to acknowledge Anzac Day in different ways," organiser Peter Dowden said.

"We wanted to gather around the peace pole and think about all people who have lost their lives in wars and about how to better promote world peace," he said.

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei said Anzac Day "is very important to acknowledge the loss of life through old wars, present wars and future wars".

"But there are other ways we can be a force for peace. New Zealand has a fantastic reputation as a peace-keeping country. When our soldiers do go overseas, they are known for being a force for reconciliation and reconstruction. We should be very proud of that."
