Memorandum revised

A revised memorandum of understanding with Te Runanga o Moeraki has been approved by the Waitaki District Council, leading to a formal signing between the two this month or next.

The council first signed a memorandum with the runanga in 2007. It was reviewed a year later and was to be reviewed every three years.

That review has just taken place and the revised memorandum was formally approved by the council yesterday.

The memorandum sets out mechanisms and processes to promote and facilitate effective consultation and liaison between the council and the runanga representing Ngai Tahu interests in the district.

Runanga upoko (head) David Higgins described it as "stage two" in a relationship that had developed over time.

Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton said the council had a good relationship with Ngai Tahu, and would continue to build on that.
