He stood next to the group yesterday with his own protest sign.
"I come to the hospital every day for a coffee, and I have to walk past them every Friday," Dunedin student Mr Sharpe said when asked why he had begun his counter-protest.
"My great-grandmother died after a backyard abortion."
Relationships between Mr Sharpe and the group were cool but good humoured yesterday when the Otago Daily Times visited about 11am.
"He's a nice guy," protester William Clifford said of Mr Sharpe.
Mr Clifford said he attended the protests to "remind us all that fetuses are human beings".
The protests were on Friday, because Friday was the day abortions were performed at the hospital, he said.
Mr Sharpe planned to return to the spot "every Friday I can" to protest against the protesters.
