Quite by accident, a chef's table in the kitchen of Hilderthorpe restaurant Riverstone Kitchen has proved a hit.

One of the chefs accidentally took a booking for three people on a night the restaurant was booked out for a wedding several weeks ago.

He did not have contact details for the trio so staff had a meal voucher and apology ready when they arrived or offered a "chef's table" in the kitchen.

They chose the chef's table and, with the bride and groom's permission, they enjoyed a meal and experienced dining in the kitchen.

One of the diners, Ian Grant, said they had a really fun night.

Some fine-dining restaurants in cities had a chef's table and it was an opportunity to do something different and for diners to see what a busy kitchen service was like, owner Monique Smith said.

The chef's table is now open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, seating up to six people, with bookings required.

"It works well for us at Riverstone Kitchen, because we're big on picking to order straight from our garden and the guests at the chef's table get to see our produce come in, be prepared and go out on their plates," Mrs Smith said.

Riverstone Kitchen recently won runner-up for best casual dining (regional) in Cuisine Magazine's 2008 Restaurant of the Year awards.
