Shania Hutton will wing her way to Auckland this morning to begin her physical rehabilitation and speech therapy.
The 10-year-old sustained serious head injuries after being struck by a car on December 22 in Riselaw Rd, Calton Hill, only metres from her home, while on her way to the local shop.
Shania and her mother, Jane, were scheduled to travel to the Wilson Centre in Auckland on Tuesday, but her journey was delayed until today because she was feeling unwell.
During the next few weeks, she will be assessed for her rehabilitation needs before having physical and speech therapy.
Mrs Hutton said, to date, more than $3500 had been given to help Shania and her family during the rehabilitation process. Of this amount, $2800 had been raised by Shania's school friends and St Clair School.
Mrs Hutton said their stay in Auckland could be between three months and two years, so it was unknown exactly how much money would be needed for her recovery.
However, the family was aiming for about $20,000, she said.
A Wild Food Buffet will also be held at the Fitzroy Hotel on March 31 to raise funds for the family.
Tickets can be bought at the Fitzroy Hotel, St Clair School office and Cut Loose, in Musselburgh Rise.
People wishing to donate funds for Shania Hutton's recovery can also give money at Kiwibank branches.
