Fire crews tackled a suspicious fire in Gore overnight at the same house visited by police last week after gunshots were heard in the area.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze  - on Hokonui Dr (State Highway 94) shortly before 2am, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said.

Two appliances attended and crews found the building "well alight".

There was initially concern that the house was occupied but it was found to be empty. The house was believed to have sustained "substantial damage".

The spokeswoman confirmed the fire took place at the address police had attended following a firearms incident last week, and it was believed to be suspicious.

CIB staff, scene of crime officers and police photographers were at the scene today assisting fire investigators, she said.

"There will be increased patrols and support from Eastern Southland Police to ensure our local communities are kept safe while these matters are being fully investigated."

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area overnight, particularly between 1am and 2am.

Anyone with information, who had not yet come forward, on the firearms incident last week should also contact police, she said.
