The pandemic pushed back the start of the winter codes and consequently they will run later than normal.
Club cricket typically starts in the first weekend of October, but the Otago Cricket Association has tabled a proposal to delay the start of the club season until October 31.
Otago Cricket Association’s Tim O’Sullivan presented a proposal which outlined the shape of the club competition at a meeting with the clubs earlier this week.
He said the association felt the delay was necessary to allow Dunedin City Council contractors the time they needed to prepare the venues for cricket.
The plan is for senior cricket to start on grass as opposed to starting out on the artificial turfs around the city.
The gap between the seasons would also allow for a short break for junior players.
"It was more of an opportunity for us to present [to the clubs] what we were thinking and we have a wee window where we’ll take some feedback on the concepts,’’ O’Sullivan said.
Under the proposal there are 20 available Saturdays. That is down from 22-24. There is no plan under the proposal to make up the lost days of play.
A decision on the club season will be made in early September.
