The arrests of two men on burglary charges are a reminder for Dunedin residents to be security conscious, police say.
A 43-year-old man was arrested at 10pm on Monday following the burglary of a King Edward St address.
Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the owner of the property chased the alleged burglar while on the phone to police.
Items from the property were found at a house where the arrested man lived, he said.
In the second incident, a 37-year-old man was arrested yesterday after being spotted by Campus Watch shining a torch into a Leith St property at 4am.
Police later found the man’s car in Brook St and say stolen items from around the North Dunedin area were inside it.
"Good work by Campus Watch for alerting us," Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.
People should lock their doors, trim trees around their property, tell neighbours before they went away and ensure valuables were not kept where they could be easily seen, he said.
People could also register the details of their assets at Serial Number Asset Partnership, a New Zealand Police initiative that made it harder for criminals to sell stolen goods.
