Sea erosion forces total closure of a section of Beach Rd

A section of the coastal Beach Rd closed to vehicles in 2008 because of sea erosion has now also been closed to walkers and cyclists.

The decision has been made by the Waitaki District Council to close all access to about 1km of Beach Rd from its intersection with Thousand Acre Rd.

In February 2008, the council closed the section to vehicles after sea erosion encroached to the road edge. It then sealed Gardiners Rd to provide alternative access between Oamaru and Kakanui along the coast.

The council's roading assets manager Michael Voss, said engineers believed instability of the land posed a risk to anyone walking or cycling in the area.

Mr Voss said people would still be able to access the beach from the Kakanui Beach Rd Reserve.

However, he advised people to beware of loose rocks and landslips in the affected area.

The section of closed road south of Gardiners Rd would still be accessible to walkers or bikers.
