Bridge opens as a Pyramid scheme finally pays off

The long awaited new Pyramid Bridge over the Mataura River opened yesterday — replacing one partly swept away in 2018.

The $4.66million project was a joint venture paid for by the NZ Transport Agency. The Gore and Southland districts contributed $650,000.

Gore Mayor Tracey Hicks said the opening was a "red letter day" for the Mataura River Valley.

"It’s really good to get to this particular point."

After Hokonui Runanga kaumatua Taare Bradshaw led a karakia and blessed the bridge, Riversdale School pupils sang a waiata.
