It was book-lover heaven in Dunedin yesterday.
Rotary joint projects director Allen Stacey said he visited the sale at 2pm and it was "flat out".
He was happy to see it doing well and thankful for community input.
"When we set the book sale up we had a lot of help from the St Hilda’s Collegiate School’s rugby team and from 30 boys from John McGlashan College, so the whole thing is a huge community effort."
Jake Ward, who was among the crowd of book lovers, managed to get his hands on 24 books.
He missed last year’s book sale, but his new collection of crime mystery books had made up for it and would "probably take two years" to read.
Many Dunedin residents were dismayed when the annual Regent Theatre 24-hour Book Sale was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving the theatre with a large supply of books.
The theatre and rotary decided to team up to offload those books.
The proceeds from the sale will be shared equally between the Dunedin Central Rotary Club, for Rotary community projects, and the Regent Theatre, to help it through the post-Covid economic decline.
The pop-up shop will be open seven days a week at the former ANZ bank, on the corner of George and Hanover Sts, including late on Thursdays, while book supplies last.
