An Australian and an Irishman walked into Dunedin ...

An Australian expected in Dunedin as part of a round-the-world run could be followed by an Irish-born "aspiring adventurer" trying to walk from Edinburgh to Dunedin.

James Thomas (30), a photographer based in the Scottish capital, will tomorrow begin his epic 19,000km walk through three continents and 15 countries, passing through Europe, the Middle East and Asia on the way.

Mr Thomas said on his website he wanted to explore the world, but also hoped to raise money for children's charity Unicef.

He chose Dunedin because it was the closest place to Edinburgh's antipodal point - directly on the opposite side of the globe - which fell in the Pacific Ocean.

His trip was expected to take about two years, about the same time as Australian runner Tom Denniss expected to take to circle the globe in an easterly direction.

Mr Denniss, who featured in the Otago Daily Times yesterday, began his 29,000km run on December 31, and flew into Queenstown the following day.

He was in Middlemarch last night and hoped to reach Dunedin later today or tomorrow, before travelling up New Zealand's east coast and then flying to North America.

He was due to complete his run back in Sydney in late 2013.
