A Dunedin student needed surgery for a head injury after an "altercation" early on Saturday, police say.
A 25-year-old Dunedin man, was granted interim name suppression in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday by Justices of the Peace Stephen Beeby and Russell Atkinson.
He is charged with injuring with intent to injure, and was remanded without appearance until today.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the injured man had been with three other students on the corner of Moray Pl and George St, about 3am on Saturday.
He said other members of the group were also assaulted in the altercation, but only the 28-year-old male student was seriously hurt.
Further charges were likely, he said.
Last night, a Dunedin Hospital spokeswoman said the student was in a stable condition in the High Dependency Unit.
