About 200 National Party members, supporters and guests from around the South were invited to an election and Christmas function in the Jack's Point Club House, near Queenstown, on Saturday night.

Clutha-Southland MP Bill English, who is deputy prime minister and finance minister, polled 19,726 votes, comfortably ahead of his nearest rival, Labour candidate Tat Loo, with 4811 votes.
