Queenstown case of coronavirus confirmed

The first case of coronavirus in the South Island has been confirmed, with a Danish national testing positive in Queenstown.

The woman in her 30s is the eighth person to test positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus in New Zealand.

The ODT understands the woman is a member of a production crew filming a Danish family of four.

The woman, who travelled with the crew from Christchurch to Queenstown separately to the family, was unwell when she arrived.

She presented to the Queenstown Medical Centre's town centre clinic in Isle St on either Thursday or Friday.

The Ministry of Health said she was hospitalised after receiving a positive result, and hospitalised for one night.

She is now recovering well after being discharged. She will recover in self isolation and will be monitored daily by health services.

A member of the family, who spoke briefly to an ODT reporter, said she was "well-known in her country", and did not want to be identified.

She was with her partner, a young child and a baby.

Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed the case in a media briefing on Sunday afternoon.

The woman arrived in Auckland on flight QR 926 from Doha on Tuesday, March 10, and flew from Auckland to Christchurch on Jetstar flight JQ225, arriving at 8am the same day.

Healthline knows the seat numbers and will be able to advise anyone on the flight, whether they are considered a close or casual contact.

  • Anyone who was on this flight and is concerned or would like information should contact the Healthline number 0800 358 5453. Interpreters are available.

Contact tracing on flights has been changed to be the two seats in all directions: front, back, both sides and diagonal. the Ministry of Health said. This is supported by current evidence and is in line with the same approach taken by European authorities.

Public health staff are conducting contact tracing and requesting close contacts stay in self isolation for 14 days from the date of potential exposure.

The Otago Daily Times understands the family spent three nights at a holiday park near the resort's town centre.
