Cases of wandering stock prompt police warning

Waikouaiti police are reminding stock owners to keep their cattle fenced in after at least five incidents of stock wandering on the road around Warrington in recent weeks.

In one incident, on October 23, a woman reported several head of cattle roaming along State Highway 1 on the Kilmog, after she clipped one, breaking her wing mirror.

It was the fourth reported incident involving cattle roaming on to the highway around the Pryde Rd and Porteous Rd area in recent weeks, Constable Jon-Paul Tremain, of Waikouaiti, said in his October community report.

"If the unfortunate were to happen and a person was injured or worse as a result of a crash involving the cattle beast, then the owner of that cattle may be held to account."

Police were called out the next day, to the intersection of SH1 and Coast Rd near Karitane, where they and several locals had to herd four cattle beasts wandering along SH1 into a nearby paddock.
