Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said police were alerted to the threat about 5pm, prior to a meeting of Otago property investors in Tahuna.
The threat of a pipe bomb at the meeting had been made over Instagram.
The person who made the threat had not been located, and police inquiries were ongoing, he said.
