The clock, which has been maintained by volunteers from the Lions Club of Alexandra since 2009, has been known to stop — sometimes for weeks at a time — but has been reliable for much of its 52 years in situ on the Knobbies Range above the town.
Lions Club member Dave Ramsay confirmed the power outage and said the town’s well-known clock had stopped before due to to power cuts or mechanical fault.
Another member said the clock had previously stopped for weeks.
Power was restored to the clock at 4pm and the hands were set to the correct time 45 minutes later.
The clock is the largest of its kind in New Zealand, measuring 11m in diameter.
The Alexandra Jaycees undertook construction in 1968 in what was a 42-day build. The Lions Club took over maintenance of the timepiece after the Jaycees folded.
