Otago claimed a bronze and New Zealand added gold in Lausanne yesterday.

Both medals came in the 3x3 mixed nation ice hockey at the Winter Youth Olympics in Switzerland.

Wakatipu High School’s Axel Ruski-Jones was part of the bronze-medal-winning team, beating fellow Queenstown player Tallulah Bryant.

The format mixes players from different countries into teams.

Ruski-Jones’ team scored with just 3sec left on the clock to break a 5-5 deadlock.

"It was a really tight game," Ruski-Jones said.

"The buzzer was going off as we scored and we all went crazy after that.

"We jumped over the boards and all just piled on top of each other."

Aucklanders Katya Blong was part of the gold-medal team, winning the final 6-1.

New Zealand’s Maniototo curling quartet will play for a bronze medal.

Zoe Harman, Lucy Neilson, Hunter Walker and Will Becker beat Germany 7-4 in their quarterfinal.

However, they were toppled 8-4 by Japan in the semifinal.

They will now play Russia, which was beaten 7-2 by Norway, for the bronze medal.

The curlers will also compete in a mixed doubles event starting in the weekend.
