The fires started around 4pm, and high winds meant Fire and Emergency New Zealand were concerned the flames could spread quickly, a spokeswoman said.

A spokesman said the fires were contained as of 7pm but four crews remained at the scene to 'mop up' and ensure no further damage.

Four fire engines and two tankers were earlier on the scene, with fire fighters from Waitati, Willowbank, Dunedin and Waikouaiti called in to fight the blazes.

The extent of damage to the house is unknown at this stage though nobody was inside the building when the fire spread to it.

Police were earlier called in to help in case nearby homes needed to be evacuated.

The fires were on Ferguson and Hill Sts, the spokeswoman said.

The cause of the fires remains unclear.
