Cake, photos and family made up the celebration, with family and friends from as far away as Perth visiting.
Born Alice Reeves in Dunedin on January 7, 1920, Mrs Ikin attended Whare Flat School before working as a shorthand typist.
She met future husband Ronald in 1943 and the couple wed at Knox Church.
Married for nearly 72 years before his death in 2015, the couple had four children. She has 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Granddaughter Jackie Merriman travelled from Perth for the occasion.
‘‘There was no doubt about coming over for it; I only wish I could have brought my husband and five kids as well.’’
She said her grandmother had always been health-conscious.
‘‘She did yoga until well into her 60s, always ate healthily and ate homegrown vegetables.
‘‘I think that’s why she’s still here.’’
Mrs Merriman said her grandmother was the rock of the family.
‘‘It’s lovely that she still remembers me. It feels amazing and very special to be part of a family who has someone reaching 100.’’
