Kiwi bands are being confirmed for the first night of EarthTonz, which is December 30.
EarthTonz is a music festival in Queenstown.
Event co-promoter Amanda Calvert said last week times were being confirmed for six or seven "well-known" New Zealand bands.
The bands will precede a mostly international line-up of bass-heavy artists performing for 15 hours over New Year's Eve and New Year's Day at Gibbston Valley.
The event is on a site that backs the Kawarau River. It is R18, and will feature American, British and New Zealand acts, complete with what American co-promoter Dan Allen describes as "an unbelievable light show".
Acts announced include former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee with DJ Aero, and The Crystal Method, both of the US; and UK electronic band The Freestylers.
Up to 10,000 people are expected.
Mrs Calvert said the New Zealand acts, which would be announced soon, ranged in genre from reggae, dubstep, and pop-rock through to "funk-fusion".
Only on-site campers will be eligible to attend the December 30 performances, with the $15 camping passes selling fast, Mrs Calvert said. Ticket sales were "progressing very well" and she was unconcerned about the announcement of another summer festival, Rhythm and Alps, near Christchurch.
"We are not worried because we have a very strong line-up ... and having Rhythm and Alps in Christchurch is fantastic, but that's completely different and not on New Year's Eve."
Mrs Calvert said the festival would also feature street performers, a wide range of food including gluten-free and vegan options, and alcohol sales starting from $5.
Buses will be running from Queenstown, Alexandra and Wanaka to Gibbston Valley on December 31.
• The line-up announced so far is The Crystal Method, Tommy Lee (of Motley Crue) with DJ Aero, The Freestylers, DJ Muggs (of Cypress Hill), Kraak and Smaak, DJ Dara, AK1200 and MC Messinian from Planet of the Drums, Boombox, Ana Sia, Heatbox and Minuit.
