Residents can request property files digitally from the council as part of a wider three-year programme to digitise council records, which the council says will "improve the management and accessibility of information for both staff and the public".
Council staff began the process about two months ago and about 400 files had been digitised, mostly arising from requests by residents.
Property files may include building permits and consents, drainage plans, plans and specifications, code of compliance certificates, planning reports, resource consent decisions and associated documents.
Council information services manager Nathan McLeod confirmed the project would cost about $477,000.
The council’s plan is to have publicly available information accessible for residents 24/7 on the council website and via its geographic information system (GIS) platform.
