Olympics: Hungarian weightlifter suffers horror injury

Hungarian weightlifter Janos Baranyai was taken to a hospital on Wednesday after dislocating his right elbow during a lift in the men's 77-kilogram division.

Baranyai was trying to lift 148 kilograms (326.3 pounds) in the snatch when his elbow popped and his forearm bent backward. He fell to the floor, shaking and crying out in pain.

The 24-year-old Baranyai was carried off the platform and taken by ambulance to a local hospital, said Benny Johansson, a technical controller at the event. It was not immediately clear how serious the injury was.

"If the ligaments are damaged then it could take several months to heal," Johansson said.

He said elbow injuries are uncommon in weightlifting competitions, but "it happens once in a while at this level."

The men's 77-kg competition was scheduled to continue later Wednesday with the top group of lifters.
