Book by Millers Flat author wins publishers' award

A book by Millers Flat author Kyle Mewburn and Auckland designer Vasanti Unka won the Best Book award at the 2011 Publishers Association of New Zealand (Panz) Book Design Awards in Auckland on Saturday night.

Hill and Hole was the first children's book to win the Best Book award at the Panz awards.

The picture book also won the Best Children's Book award.

The Young Designer of the Year award went to Aucklander Pieta Brenton for Where Your Left Hand Rests by Fiona Kidman (Random House New Zealand).

Brenton also won Best Non-illustrated Book for her design of The Great Wrong War (Random House New Zealand).

The award winners were selected from 136 entries by 33 publishers.

Other awards were: Best Cover, Greg Simpson, Lives of the Poets, by John Newton (Victoria University Press); Best Typography, Christine Hansen, Stunning Debut of the Repairing of a Life, by Leigh Davis (Otago University Press); Best Educational Book, Jodi Wicksteed, School Journal Part 3 Number 3 2010, Learning Media (Te Pou Taki KFrere); Best Illustrated Book, Spencer Levine (cover) and Katrina Duncan (interior), Blue Smoke: The Lost Dawn of New Zealand Popular Music 1918-1964, by Chris Bourke (Auckland University Press).
