It has transported prime ministers, ministers and VIPs, and the Dunedin-based Crown limousine could soon transport you - for a price.

Seventeen of the 2008 BMW 730LD vehicles were already on the market, a further 17 - including the Dunedin-based limo - would be sold after the Rugby World Cup.

A Department of Internal Affairs spokesman said the 17 Crown limos, including the Dunedin vehicle, would be used to "transport VIPs from other countries who are here as part of the RWC Guest of Government programme".

The Government has remained tightlipped over the VIPs coming for the tournament, but an announcement was expected before the event.

Cars held back for the tournament - including the Dunedin limo - would be progressively auctioned by the end of the year, the spokesman said.

The cars already on the market were being offered by way of tender through Turners Auctions, with odometer distances ranging from 66,412km to 99,700km.

"We won't disclose our price expectation. Obviously, the department hopes to get a good price for the cars," he said.

Thirty-four new BMW 7 series limousines, worth more than $200,000 each, were due to arrive in New Zealand between June and August to replace the current three-year-old fleet.

Yesterday, Internal Affairs confirmed the Dunedin-based car had 65,000km on its clock.
