Octagon a studio for ice carver

Take a world-renowned carver, combined with a chainsaw, chisels and saw ... and just add ice, lots and lots of ice.

Five giant blocks of ice will be carved into sculptures by Auckland-based ice carver Victor Cagayat, in the Octagon in Dunedin, tomorrow.

The former Filipino said it would be his first visit to the city, and he was busy researching Dunedin-related topics for inspiration but would "maybe make a skier or snowboarder".

A regular visitor to Queenstown to work on ice sculptures, Mr Cagayat learned his craft in the Philippines working in the hospitality industry.

The 1m high blocks of ice would be coming from Auckland by truck, and from noon on Saturday he would use his chainsaw, chisels and saw to transform them into five sculptures.
