Calls over vandalised trees

The Dunedin City Council has received five phone calls, but no leads, as it seeks information about "mindless" damage to 14 young trees in Portsmouth Dr, in Dunedin.

Council staff appealed to the public for information on Tuesday, after discovering 14 of the gum tree plantings had been snapped in half by vandals.

Originally, it was thought the damage occurred on Monday, but council community and recreation services manager Mick Reece said it was now thought to have happened on Saturday night.

The five callers had been unable to identify the culprits, but one of those contacting the council had reported noticing the damaged trees on Sunday morning, he said.

Among several callers to offer support was former city councillor and Labour MP David Benson-Pope, who sparked the idea for the trees in 2008 and helped raise money for the project, Mr Reece said.

The damage was the second time the trees had been targeted by vandals since they were first planted in 2009.
