A small truck set on fire on Dunedin's Southern Motorway this morning causing "major" traffic problems.

A police spokesman said they were called to the fire, about 150m from Lookout Point Fire Station, at 7.04am.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was also called and the fire was extinguished.

No-one was injured, but one lane of the motorway was closed causing "major" traffic build up.

Police were informed traffic had backed up about 3km.

A tow truck was called and the lane was reopened just after 8am.

NZ Transport Agency advised there would be delays in the area, before later saying the road had been cleared.

A member of the public said it was not a car that set on fire as originally reported, but a small truck.
