Lincoln residents will not be seeing university graduates marching through the township next year because the ceremony has been moved to the Christchurch Town Hall.

Lincoln University acting vice-chancellor professor Bruce McKenzie said the key driver for the decision is the difficulty of concentrating graduation activities on campus and the immediate area during its major rebuild programme.

“We value our place in the Selwyn community, and acknowledge that some may be disappointed at the decision to move the ceremony, and these thoughts have been expressed in correspondence from the Lincoln Community Committee,” he said.

At a meeting in May, the Lincoln Community Committee said that it would be disappointing to lose the procession of graduands through the township if the ceremony is shifted to the Christchurch Town Hall.

They decided to send a letter of support to keep the tradition at the Lincoln Event Centre to the university council.

Chairwomen Kathryn Claridge said the committee appreciates the university considering their letter and accepts the decision to hold the 2020 graduation ceremony in the Christchurch Town Hall.

“We are encouraged to hear that the council is motivated to return graduation to the Lincoln township when the campus redevelopment programme is able to support graduation activities,” she said.

Lincoln University is planning $10 million upgrade to the recreation centre beginning next month. It is expected to be completed in February 2021.

Professor McKenzie said the council is very motivated to return graduation to the district.

“More specifically the Lincoln township, once the campus redevelopment programme has settled and we can provide surroundings that create an experience commensurate with the expectations of our students and their families,” he said.
