A long-term solution to sand erosion at Dunedin beaches will be investigated at hearings next month, following 50 public submissions on the problem.

St Clair and Middle beaches were severely eroded last year, resulting in sand dredged from the harbour being transported to shore up sand hills.

In December, the Dunedin City Council announced it wanted as much public input as possible to find a solution.

In particular, it was looking for photographic records of the whole area, from St Clair to St Kilda beaches.

Community and recreation services manager Mick Reece said there was a good range of submissions and suggestions and they would be considered by people with a technical knowledge of the issue, and passed to the hearings panel of councillors.
