Reserve responsibility left open

The Teviot Community Board is leaving the door ajar for residents to take ownership of a reserve in Millers Flat.

The ongoing plan for the Millers Flat Recreation Reserve was on the agenda of last week's board meeting in Roxburgh.

The reserve alongside Teviot Rd, which comprises two tennis courts, a playground and a war memorial, is owned and administered by the Central Otago District Council.

A report by council parks officer Marie Gordon said the subcommittee which carried out the maintenance and operation of the reserve had ''effectively become inactive''. At a public meeting in May residents showed little interest in forming a committee to operate the reserve, the report said.

However, residents valued the facilities on the reserve and wanted to see the tennis courts improved.

More than $80,000 is required to upgrade the tennis court facilities, including surfacing and fencing.

Board members were reluctant to fund further work at the reserve because of the meagre usage of the reserve and ''lack of interest'' from the community in fundraising.

However, the board agreed on further discussion with the community around funding opportunities.

The board discussed a move to engage with Millers Flat School about shared-use options at the reserve.
