Wearing seat belts helped save the lives of two men involved in a crash on Ravensbourne Rd on Saturday morning, police say.

The two men were travelling from Port Chalmers to Dunedin shortly before 8am when just south of Wanaka St, Ravensbourne, their vehicle left the road and dropped 3m to land on its roof on the track next to the railway line, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said.

The 22-year-old driver suffered seat belt injuries and his intoxicated passenger a suspected broken jaw. Both were taken to Dunedin Hospital.

"The officers who attended said the seat belt saved his life."

Ice was not thought to be a factor as the road had been treated, so a blood sample was taken from the driver, Snr Sgt Benn said.
